Sunday 12th November 2017: Wideopen U13 Wanderers v. Gateshead FC

The Wanderers played their first match of the recently formatted league set up when they took on Gateshead FC at Lockey Park.

Credit must be given to both sets of players,  who despite the windy conditions, played some excellent football throughout.

The Wanderers took the lead half-way through the first half when a fine through-ball from Fin Bell was controlled by Dan Armstrong who then lifted the ball over the keeper and into the Gateshead net.

Gateshead had chances of their own, but Sam Woodward in the home goal was equal to everything that was struck at him.

The Wanderers doubled their lead before half time when James Walker showed great composure to break through the Gateshead defence and slip the ball past the keeper. This was his 20th goal of the season in only 9 games.

An error at the back by the Wanderers allowed Gateshead back into the game just before half time when the lively number 9 for Gateshead fired home from just inside the box to leave the half time score at 2-1 to the home side.

The second half was a very even and competitive affair with chances for both teams. Both goalkeepers were having excellent games, however, and the score remained 2-1 until the last five minutes of the match when the Wanderers conceded a penalty which was confidently dispatched by the Gateshead number 9.

The final score was 2-2, a fair result and a good game to watch for the large number of spectators who were present.

The entire Wanderers squad played their part, and the desire and attitude shown towards the end of the game when they were put under pressure, was a pleasure to watch and was once again evidence of the excellent team spirit that exists within this group of players.

Man of the Match: Sam Woodward.
