Wideopen District F.C 4 (Jubb, Bell 3)
British Telecom 2
Me (Mark) and LITTLE Boothy were like kids in a sweet shop, OH YEAH we have a game. No snow, no rain and no frost what more could you ask for, well a pitch that had not been played on earlier in the day. The pitch looked like a tractor had been over it, but the most important thing was to be able to play football.
Well Wideopen had virtually a full squad and choices were difficult, but the playing surface made it hard to play the type of football Wideopen prefer. The midfield found it hard to pass the ball and create and this meant passes went astray, Newcastle BT were quick to capitalise and put the visitors defence under pressure. Swindon in goal had to be alert at all times and it was his alertness that prevented the hosts taking the lead with a brilliant save on a one on one. This sparked Wideopen in to action and they took the lead through Jubb, who cut in from the left on to his right foot and slotted home from 12 yards.
Not to be upstaged by his mate, Bell decided to get in on the act. Quinn (Nial) received the ball high up the pitch and for some reason Ord was there as well and it was his flick-on that set Bell through to take on the defence and shoot across the keeper to make it 2-0 to the visitors.
Telecom pulled a goal back in the second half with a sweetly struck drive from outside the box after a corner was half cleared; Swindon got a hand to it but not enough to keep it out.
Wideopen then had a couple of chances to get their two goal advantage back, Bell missing a couple and Quinn (Nial) putting a chance over. But Bell was fed in and got beyond the defence only to be brought down from behind, he took the penalty and he tucked it away sending the keeper the wrong way.
Wideopen could not break their host’s resilience and were pegged back with a quickly taken free-kick from the edge of the box; Wideopen disputed the free-kick as the referee did not allow the players to be ready.
The host’s tails were up and they were trying to force Wideopen back. Heatley was brought on and he started to influence the game with some searching passes. However, it was Bell who finished off the game with his third goal; he rounded the keeper and easily rolled the ball home to give Wideopen all three points.
Not a classic game, but after a month without any games, a game is a game and points on the board are important.
