Special Guests

Over the years Wideopen Juniors' Presentation Nights have attracted a number of special guests, some local stars, some celebrities on the wider 'stage'.

Newcastle's Warren Barton (above right) was particularly complimentary about the club and the Presentation Night.

Pavel Scrnicek (below right), also from Newcastle United, was a great hit with the players and their families. He was keen to speak to everyone and willingly endured the endless requests for photographs.

Several Wideopen Juniors' players have moved on to bigger and better things in the senior game. Roy Gordon (NUFC) and Phil Poole (Hull City F.C.) came back to Presentation Night in 1999 and seemed to thoroughly enjoy renewing old acquaintances.

Phil Poole (right)
As with Roy Gordon, Phil came to Wideopen and District Juniors at the ripe old age of eleven and also stayed (playing in the same successful side as Roy Gordon) until he reached the age of fourteen.
Phil had impressed the Newcastle United scouts with his ability and was invited to join them, where he stayed for four years.
This proved to be a turning point for Phil when he made the very difficult decision to leave Newcastle United and join Hull City.
This turned out to be a good choice as he has been a regular in the reserves and has played for the first team on several occasions.
Roy Gordon (right)
Roy began his football with us at Wideopen and District Juniors when he was eleven years old. He stayed with us until he reached the age of fourteen, when Newcastle United, who had been tracking Roy for some time (along with other clubs), asked him to go along to join them.
Roy has remained with Newcastle for six years and is a regular player in the under seventeen’s squad which won their league and reached the semi-finals of the cup in season 1998-99. During this season Roy also managed to force himself into the reckoning for the successful reserve team.
During his time at Newcastle, Roy has worked under Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Ruud Gullet (not a bad midfield eh!).
The following photographs have been given to Wideopen Juniors from events where Wideopen players have met some great names from football.
